I'm a passionate Portuguese teacher, a lifelong language nerd, and — if you'll let me — your future learning buddy. I was born and raised in Santos, on the coast of São Paulo, and hold a PhD in Portuguese Philology from USP, Brazil's top university. For over twelve years I've taught students all over the world: heritage speakers, business professionals, CELPE-Bras candidates, kids, and a few diplomats along the way.
My approach is different. I teach real Brazilian Portuguese — the warm, expressive, alive version you actually hear in Brazil — through real conversation, not isolated grammar rules. And I treat every student as a person with their own goals, never just a level in a textbook.

Happy Portuguese is not a large tutor marketplace or a generic recorded course. You learn directly with Dra. Carla Dias, a Brazilian Portuguese specialist with a PhD from USP, more than 12 years of teaching experience, and experience supporting over 800 students. Your lessons are built around your current level and real goals — whether you want to communicate with family, work with Brazilian clients, prepare for CELPE-Bras, travel, or help your child stay connected to Brazilian culture. You receive live feedback, personalised materials through Google Classroom, and a written summary after each class so every lesson connects to the next.
Yes. Your first 30-minute class is free, with no credit card and no obligation to continue. It is a real diagnostic lesson on Zoom with Dra. Carla, not a sales call. She will assess your speaking, listening, and reading; identify your main strengths and gaps; and recommend the most suitable program and pace for your goals. You will receive a written summary of your level and a personalised study plan within 24 hours.
Absolutely. Complete beginners are welcome. Dra. Carla will introduce Portuguese gradually, explain unfamiliar concepts clearly, and adjust the pace to your confidence and learning style. You do not need to study before your free first class. The purpose of that class is to understand where you are starting, what you want to achieve, and which learning path will work best for you.
Language apps can be useful for reviewing vocabulary and maintaining a daily practice habit. However, they cannot fully replace spontaneous conversation, personalised pronunciation feedback, cultural context, and a learning plan that responds to your specific difficulties. Happy Portuguese helps you move from recognising Portuguese to actually using it in real conversations. You can continue using an app between classes while your lessons provide the direction, correction, and speaking practice an app cannot offer by itself.
There is no honest timeline that applies to every student. Your progress depends on your starting level, goals, class frequency, previous language experience, and how consistently you interact with Portuguese between lessons. After your free first class, Dra. Carla will assess your current abilities and give you a realistic, personalised study plan. One focused class per week combined with short, regular practice at home can produce steady progress without requiring hours of study every day.
You do not need to feel confident before beginning — building that confidence is part of the process. Mistakes are expected, and lessons are adapted to your current level rather than placing you in situations for which you are not ready. You will practise Portuguese in a patient, supportive environment where feedback helps you communicate more clearly without making you afraid to speak.
Happy Portuguese specialises in Brazilian Portuguese. Lessons include the pronunciation, vocabulary, everyday expressions, cultural context, and communication styles used in Brazil. This makes the programs especially suitable for students communicating with Brazilian family members, travelling or relocating to Brazil, working with Brazilian clients, or preparing for the CELPE-Bras exam.
Adult and Young Learner plans start at $95 per month for 4 classes, while specialized CELPE-Bras and Business Portuguese plans start at $133. Four-class packages include a 5% discount, and eight- or twelve-class packages include a 10% discount. Drop-ins are $30 for Adult and Young Learner classes and $35 for CELPE-Bras and Business Portuguese. Monthly plans include Google Classroom access, class-summary PDFs, and personalized feedback.
A class credit is one prepaid class slot. Monthly plans come with 4, 8, or 12 credits, normally used once, twice, or three times per week. If your schedule changes, reschedule with at least 24 hours notice so the credit can be used on the new date.
All classes are held live on Zoom. Before your first class you receive a recurring Zoom link. Between sessions, materials, exercises, and weekly videos or songs are shared through Google Classroom — a private space set up specifically for your program. No special software beyond Zoom is needed.
You can reschedule an individual class with at least 24 hours' notice at no penalty. Either party can cancel ongoing classes at any time with 15 calendar days' notice by email. If you cancel with the required notice, any amount already paid for that month is refunded, with only the classes already taken deducted. A class missed without notice is counted as delivered.
Booking a free first class is the best way to find out — Dra. Carla will assess your level and recommend the right path. As a rough guide: choose CELPE-Bras Prep if you need the Brazilian certification for work, study, or citizenship; Business Portuguese if you are a professional working with Brazilian clients; Adult Classes for personal or ongoing study; Young Learners for a child or teenager aged 5–17.
